Peak hiking season runs from mid-May through late October. September and early October offer the best combination of comfortable temperatures (50-65F), fall foliage, and fewer crowds than summer. The Adirondacks and Catskills peak for fall color around the first two weeks of October. Spring (May-June) brings waterfalls at their most powerful from snowmelt but also brings mud and blackflies in the mountains.
Absolutely. Rockaway Beach in Queens is the city's surf hub, reachable by subway. Montauk at the eastern tip of Long Island has the most consistent waves and a genuine surf culture. Long Beach on Long Island is another popular spot. The best surf season is late summer through fall when hurricane swells push consistent waves northward. Water temperatures range from wetsuit-required (50-60F in spring) to tolerable (68-75F in August-September).
Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid has the biggest vertical drop in the East (3,430 ft) and Olympic pedigree. Gore Mountain in the Adirondacks offers 110 trails with fewer crowds. In the Catskills, Hunter Mountain and Windham are closest to NYC (2-2.5 hours). Belleayre is state-run with lower prices. Greek Peak near Ithaca serves Central New York. Season runs late November through early April, with peak conditions January-February.
Watkins Glen State Park is one of the most spectacular natural sites in the eastern United States. The Gorge Trail passes 19 waterfalls in 2 miles through a 200-foot-deep canyon. It is absolutely worth the trip — combine it with nearby wineries on Seneca Lake, Taughannock Falls (15 minutes north of Ithaca), and the town of Ithaca for a 2-3 day Finger Lakes getaway.
Fire Island is car-free and accessible only by ferry. The most common route is LIRR from Penn Station to Bay Shore (1 hour, $15-25 round trip), then the Fire Island Ferries to your destination community (20-30 minutes, $10-20 round trip). Ferries also run from Sayville and Patchogue to different parts of the island. In summer, ferries run roughly every hour. Book accommodations well ahead for July-August weekends.
Popular trailheads (Cascade Mountain, Marcy Dam, Lake Placid) fill parking lots by 7-8am on summer weekends. The High Peaks region gets the most pressure. But the Adirondack Park is enormous — 6 million acres with thousands of miles of trails. Seek out the western Adirondacks, Cranberry Lake, or the Siamese Ponds Wilderness for genuine solitude. Weekdays are always quieter. September after Labor Day is ideal.
